Getting around

Kangaroo Flat has its own V/Line station on the Bendigo line, the stop before Bendigo for trains from Melbourne, and in the timetable in force since 23 August 2026 the weekday run on into Bendigo takes six to eight minutes. For shorter trips the council maps walking routes to the station, and the station has a secure bike cage.

From V/Line’s Bendigo line timetable and the City of Greater Bendigo.

A train trip, worked through

Times change, so this is a worked example from one timetable, not a promise about any day’s service. Every figure is read from V/Line’s Bendigo line timetable (PDF), effective 23 August 2026, as at October 2026.

  1. Find the right table

The timetable runs in two directions, Melbourne to Bendigo and Bendigo to Melbourne, with separate tables for weekdays and weekends. Kangaroo Flat sits between Castlemaine and Bendigo in both.

  2. Coming up from Melbourne

One weekday train leaves Southern Cross at 10.02, reaches Kangaroo Flat at 11.50 and arrives in Bendigo at 11.58. On that service Southern Cross to Kangaroo Flat takes 1 hour 48 minutes, and Kangaroo Flat to Bendigo 8 minutes.

  3. Going down to Melbourne

In the other direction, a weekday train leaves Kangaroo Flat at 07.51, calls at Castlemaine at 08.13 and reaches Southern Cross at 09.49: 1 hour 58 minutes in all.

  4. Read the letters

The timetable’s key marks services that run to or from Echuca (E) or Swan Hill (SH), stops where a train only picks up (u) or only sets down (d), and services needing a reservation. Some trains also carry on past Bendigo to Eaglehawk or Epsom.

  5. Check on the day

The timetable carries two warnings of its own. On public holidays an altered timetable may apply. And when a Catastrophic fire danger declaration covers any fire district on a service’s route, that service may not run. For live service updates, the timetable points to transport.vic.gov.au, the PTV app or 1800 800 007.

The station itself

The station is on the Victorian Heritage Register, built on the Melbourne to Echuca line, which Heritage Victoria describes as the bigger of the colony’s two earliest main trunk lines. Its buildings are in the “Carlsruhe” style, and in January 2014 its platforms were extended for longer trains. Its listed address is 2B Short Street.

On foot and by bike

  • A walking map for the station. The council publishes a walking map for Kangaroo Flat station (PDF) showing what is within walking distance.
  • Parkiteer. Public Transport Victoria runs a free secure bike cage, with 24-hour access, at Kangaroo Flat and Bendigo stations. You register through Bicycle Network to get an access card.
  • Bikes on trains. Folding bikes can go on V/Line trains, and conventional bikes when there is room.
  • Bikes on buses. The council says bike racks are fitted to buses on 14 local Bendigo routes and on the Bendigo to Heathcote route.
  • Bring a lock. The council’s own advice for parking a bike is to bring your own.

For longer rides, the Bendigo Creek Trail starts at Crusoe Reservoir and runs to Epsom.

Sharing the path

Shared paths in Greater Bendigo carry everyone at once: people on foot or in wheelchairs, riders, scooters, runners, prams and dogs. The council’s etiquette comes down to a few habits. Everyone keeps to the left where they can, and adults help children with them do the same. If you are walking, stay predictable: look around before you change direction, keep half an ear out for a bell or a call even with headphones in, let quicker people by, step aside if you stop for a chat, and keep your dog close and clean up after it. If you are riding, walkers have right of way: ride at an easy pace, ease off when you pass, go by on the right after a ring or a word of warning, give children and dogs extra room, signal before blind corners and underpasses, and light yourself up and wear something bright after dark.
